Welcome back to week 2 of the One Room Challenge! If you missed week 1 of my office / studio makeover, you can find it here. View my week two Instagram post here.
Week Two's Primary Goal: The Mood board
Happy to announce that I finally finished my mood board! I included most items that I actually have already sourced or already know that I will be ordering, and I am so pleased with how it is coming together visually. Time will tell how it actually all comes together, but I am relieved to see that it already is starting to look and feel like "me".
As a refresher from week one, my office will also be my art studio, so it will need to be an extremely flexible space that functions seamlessly and keeps me organized as I evolve through the years creatively and professionally. My highest priority is for the space to feel inspiring, energetic, and creative. With that in mind, I picked a selection of patterns and colors that energize me and immediately catapult me into a better mood. To me, this means designing around my current favorite color, a zesty coral paired with a natural green. These bright colors will add a pop of freshness, and when mixed with deep wood furniture with vintage touches it will tie in nicely with the historic nature of the home.
Choosing Paint Colors
I am looking for a bright cheery pop of color, but I am not looking to be overwhelmed with being surrounded by over-saturation. For me it is important to have whatever project or art I am working on be my primary focus in the room rather than being distracted by the decor around me, so I am treading a fine line between letting the space be bold, but also subdued.
For the best of both worlds, I decided to paint the trim and ceiling a bright green, and keep the walls a soothing creamy off-white. This would allow the walls directly around my workspaces in my line of site to be neutral, but the overall impact of the room when I move around it still be bold. Best of both worlds!
It is important to me to choose water based low VOC paint so I am deciding to splurge on the best of the best Farrow & Ball for this project. I chose Farrow & Ball's Yeabridge Green for the trim, because to me it is the brightest, cheeriest, least complicated green in their selection. It immediately brings me joy and despite its saturation, still feels soft. Green brings me a sense of calm, which is exactly the two feelings I am going for most in this room.
To contrast the bright green I will paint the walls Farrow & Ball's Au Lait which is a luxurious milky creamy white that will bring a nice soothing warmth to the room. The Au Lait did not photograph well, but I took a photo of the swatch combination below.
I will be painting the green trim in a fun high-gloss finish because who can resist a luxurious glossy trim? And the walls and ceiling will be painted in their Estate Emulsion finish, which is the most durable of all of their finishes. Being that this is also an art studio after all, durability will be VERY important because who knows what kind of mess I will manage to create in there...
Furniture Sourcing
I sourced two exciting pieces this week!
As a refresher, I needed to source a surface that could flexibly adjust to different angles for all the different types of art I plan to create on this table, and a surface that I won't be afraid to get messy. This was a tall ask and I was pretty clueless where to begin looking, until I stumbled upon the perfect find: this incredible solid wood drafting table. I saw the photo first and was bracing myself for high price impact once I clicked... but was SHOCKED to see it priced at $160!!!!! An absolute steal. Bought immediately. I love the vintage feel with the oversized metal hardware and the rich dark wood which ties in perfectly with the stained hardwood floors.
The second piece was a unplanned purchase at one of my favorite vintage markets Maplewood Mercantile where I stumbled upon this gorgeous vintage cane chair. When I saw the ornate wood detailing I immediately knew I had to have her, so home she came!
I plan to reupholster her existing brown velvet cushion to breathe new life into the chair and add a nice pop of color. Paired with some sort of future small end table and a floor lamp, the empty corner of the room is coming along nicely!
Thats all for this week! Next week I plan to tackle spackling the trim, prepping the walls, sourcing and ordering the cabinetry, roman shades as well as other furniture.
As a reminder, this project is part of the Spring 2024 One Room Challenge where we makeover a room over the course of 8 weeks. Check out my post on Instagram for more video content, and make sure to stay up to date on all of the other amazing projects over on the ORC website.
See you next week!
